Understanding the User

The following question guided my use of Bumble during the two days I spent:

"What would a user want to achieve with an app like this?"

Upon doing this research, I analyzed Bumble's competition and also identified the company's value proposition.

Research

User’s profile

The research for this project was based on books by renowned authors in the field of UX Design, which enabled us to define the objectives and describe the profiles of the users who attended the study.

User A

  • Single people
  • 19 to 25 years old
  • living in Mexico
  • Have a Bumble’s paid subscription.

User B

  • Single people
  • 19 to 25 years old
  • living in Mexico
  • Have a Bumble’s free subscription.

Recruitment

My plan to gain the required number of participants was to create banners and videos and share them across different social networks, and we also shared the exact amount of money to be received for completing the test.

That post contained a link to a screener survey that filtered people based on certain characteristics.

Usability Testing

The usability tests were conducted with 7 users (4 men, 3 women) from different regions of Mexico (north and central).

Before starting usability testing we explained how the teleconferencing software program worked and the dynamics of usability testing.

Once with the participant, we proceeded to conduct a brief interview to get a general overview of the participants and their previous experience with dating applications.

Task 1. Make a match with a person of your interest.

task 1: person matching with other person on the app

Task 2. Switch from Date mode to Bizz mode.

task 2: Person switching from date to bizz mode on the Bumble app

Task 3. Access information related to premium plans

task 3: Photo about the information of different plans on premium in the app

Main Findings

Finally, based on the information collected, we carried out an analysis through a grouping and identification of patterns, complemented by a series of discussions that allowed us to make sense of the different findings.

Results

The usability problems could be recognized in the following screens: home page, product search and selection, and payment, which show that the interface lacks some basics of user-centered design. This may affect the way in which users perform their tasks and the fulfillment of their objectives within the online store.

I learned to:

  • Generate empathy during usability testing.
  • Generate behavioral patterns
  • Recruit people in different social networks.
